Dog Training/Rehab Tip - Keep Learning!
This is a reprint from the July 2024 newsletter.
I can't stress this enough! There is sooooooo much to learn, you will NEVER know everything there is to know about dog behavior. The more you learn the more you will realize this is true. The most knowledgeable people out there will tell you they are still learning and always will be. You will find that the more you learn, the more humble you will become. People with very little knowledge are the ones most likely to feel overconfident and talk about how much they know because they haven't yet learned just how much there is to know.
Â
Every dog is different, and the root cause of a dogs behavior issues can be for a variety of reasons. This is why, as a first step, it is very important to learn all you can about dog body language and behavior so you can recognize when your dog is trying to communicate with you and understand what your dog is trying to tell you.
Â
So many times we can easily miss the communication, and misinterpret the communication we do observe. Once you can recognize your dog is trying to communicate something to you, and once you can understand what he is trying to tell you, you will then be able to begin to figure out how to help your dog. Don't be afraid to admit you need help and call in the experts because mastering body language and behavior is not a simple task and is not something you can learn overnight.
Â
When learning, be sure to be careful who you learn from. And when calling in the experts, be sure you enlist the help of those properly qualified and experienced in dog behavior and training. There are too many people on social media claiming to be experts who have no real training or education in dog behavior, so beware! There are also many people in dog related professions who, while they mean well, simply are not properly educated in dog training or behavior and may be misguiding you where training and behavior advice is concerned. Be sure to read my blog post "How to find a Good Dog Trainer" to learn more.
